GENERAL INFORMATION ON ÖDEMİŞ DISTRICT

The history of Ödemiş district goes back until 3000 B.C. as a settlement that has sheltered many civilizations throughout its history. Today, Ödemiş district appears like a modern city that takes its course for reaching the full development level.

As a city growing day by day thanks to the development of its population, its economic and cultural structure, its agriculture and industry, Ödemiş is also ready to become a province in terms of its geographical location.

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION AND NEIGHBOURS OF THE DISTRICT

Ödemiş district is at an elevation of 123 meters from sea level and its surface is 1082.6 Km2. Bozdağlar Mountains are located at the northern part of the district with an elevation of 2157 meters from sea level while Aydın Mountains are located at its southern part. Ödemiş is established between those two rugged terrains, on a plain that took its name.

DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION ON ÖDEMİŞ

Ödemiş is one of the biggest districts of Turkey and it has a population about 150.000 with its county seat, its small towns and villages.  The population growth rate of our district is 6.28%.

CLIMATE

Ödemiş reflects the characteristics of the Mediterranean climate. Thus its summers are hot and arid while its winters are mild and rainy. Its natural vegetation is maquis. Convenient climate conditions enable the carrying out of all kinds of irrigated and dry farming on the plains of the district.

LAND AND ITS DISTRIBUTION

The total land of Ödemiş district is 107.900 Hectares and its distribution is as follows:

Agricultural Land : 37.531 Ha.

Total Surface Area : 107.900 Ha.

STREAMS AND LAKES

The biggest stream of Ödemiş district is Small Menderes. This stream starts on the frontiers of Kiraz district. It divides the Small Menderes Plain into two regions, passing from its middle. Çomaklar, Korga, Bademli, Birgi and Üzümlü brooks join this stream and feed it.  Rivers and brooks dry up in the summer months. The surface of Small Menderes stream is 110 Hectares. The water potential within the boundaries of the district is 140 hm3/year. Potato and other irrigated farming products are mainly irrigated with the water coming to the region from the Gölcük plateau.

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY

The economic structure of Ödemiş is based on agriculture and animal husbandry plays an important role in the district.

AGRICULTURE

Agricultural activities are important in Ödemiş, due to the climatic and geographical characteristics of the district. Potato is one of the most important agricultural products of the district. Each year, the early grown potato harvest starts during the first weeks of May and harvest continues until the month of July.

 

FRUIT AND SEEDLING PRODUCTION

There are 414 special licensed seedling producers in our district. Their production corresponds approximately to 50% of the production realized in Turkey.

 

GREENHOUSING

During the last years greenhousing started to become widespread.

 

SMALL INDUSTRIAL ENTERPRISES

One of the most important economic sectors of Ödemiş is the small and medium sized industry. There are a total of 1200 places of business as of the year 2004. While 1039 workplaces are active at present in Ödemiş Small Industrial Area, 161 workplaces are empty.

TRADE

Since the economic structure of Ödemiş district is based on agriculture, the manufacture of Agricultural Equipment and Machinery plays an important role in the development of the industry.  As we take a look at the breakdown of the trade sector in Ödemiş, we might observe 3 groups:

A-) Domestic trade of the district, aimed at meeting the needs and the demand of the district population;

 

B-) Commercial activities aimed at marketing the agricultural and industrial products of the district in other regions of the country;

 

C-) Commercial activities aimed at marketing the major agricultural and industrial products of the district abroad.About 1.314 companies which are active in the trade sector of Ödemiş are continuing their activities as members of Ödemiş Chamber of Commerce. 456 of them carry out their activities as legal entity companies of different types while the rest of them carry out their activities as real persons.
